At 10 p.m. on January 2, Ahamada Mafabi, a 37-year-old Christian father of four, was attacked and his throat cut with a long Somali knife as he made his way home in Mbale, Uganda.

Earlier that evening Mafabi had participated in a Christian-Muslim debate in Nakaloke, Sironko District. As a result of the public debate thirteen Muslims committed their lives to Jesus.

Mafabi’s pastor shared: “[After the debate] Muslims responded openly to receive Christ. There were shouts from the Muslims [ in attendance] demanding that Mafabi leave the meeting, saying, ‘Mafabi, stop your blasphemy of equating Issa [Jesus] with God, calling him the Son of God.'”

Fearing that harm would come to Mafabi, his pastor sent him home with two Christian escorts. Radical Muslims followed the men home, knocking them off of their motorcycles and as they shouted, “Allah Akbar,” they cut Mafabi’s throat. The escorts fled the scene.

Previous to this incident, Mafabi had received threats by text message. One of them read, “Stop taking our members to your church. Know that your church and your life are in danger.”

Mafabi came to Christ from Islam in December of 2020. Soon after his conversion, Mafabi began participating in public Christian-Muslim debates with his pastor. Together, they saw more than 100 Muslims turn to Jesus.

Mafabi’s pastor states that he now struggles with fear but is keeping hold of the faith. “I have some fears, but this is part of the spiritual warfare that comes with Christian persecution, and I am prepared to face it.”
