Audio Bibles and Aid to Persecuted Believers

Once little known to the world, Eritrea made international headlines in 2012 when more than 200,000 people fled a brutal crackdown and a targeted “witch-hunt” against Christians. Under President Isaias Afwerki, the country descended into a reign of terror marked by imprisonments, torture, and executions. In desperation, thousands risked their lives in overcrowded boats—many drowning in the attempt to escape a regime without mercy.

Christianity was once the dominant faith in Eritrea. Today, only a small and courageous remnant remains—many living in hiding, many imprisoned, and all in urgent need of support.

Since 2009, Door of Hope International has been bringing awareness of atrocities and aid to imprisoned Christians and their families in Eritrea.

“We need more Bibles!”

It is estimated that as many as 3,000 believers are currently imprisoned in Eritrea, many enduring indefinite detention—without trial, without justice, and without the Word of God to give them hope.

Thousands more gather in secret house churches across the country. They worship in whispers, often without a single Bible among them.

We believe there is nothing more painful for a Christian than being without God’s Word.

“A Christian without a Bible is like a fish without water, or a bird without air. Christians are creatures of God’s Word and must have His Word to grow spiritually.”
—Pastor Haralan Popov

As a growing chorus of persecuted believers cries out, “We need more Bibles!”, we believe God is calling us to respond.

How We’re Responding

By God’s grace and through the generosity of friends like you, we’ve already delivered over 1,100 solar-powered audio Bibles into the hands of suffering Eritrean Christians—including courageous pastors behind bars, imprisoned for their unwavering faith.

But many more are still waiting. Waiting for the comfort, strength, and hope that only God’s Word can bring.

Join Us in Bringing the Word to Eritrea

Alongside these audio Bibles, we also provide financial support to the families of imprisoned pastors and persecuted believers across the country—offering practical help and spiritual encouragement.

Let’s stand together with our brothers and sisters in Eritrea.

Let’s bring light into one of the darkest corners of the world.

Together, we can answer their cry. Together, we can deliver God’s Word.
