Help Persecuted Christians
Be the Reason Hope Grows in Eritrea
Eritrea is often called the “North Korea of Africa,” a nation where only three Christian denominations are legally recognized: Eritrean Orthodox, Lutheran, and Roman Catholic. Anyone who follows Jesus outside of these state-approved churches becomes part of the Underground Church—and risks brutal persecution, including violence, severe deprivation, and indefinite imprisonment.
In 2019, Pastor Yohan was violently torn from his wife and children. His “crime”? Preaching God’s Word and sharing the love of Jesus. Authorities told him he would spend the next years of his life in prison paying for this offense.
Torture. Starvation Silence.
For the next three years, Pastor Yohan endured unimaginable suffering—beatings, starvation, and hard labor. His hands blistered and bled. His limbs throbbed constantly. A daily meal of watery lentil gruel left him with permanent stomach pain. The harsh conditions of prison life were a shock to his gentle spirit. But eventually, the torture, hunger, and cold became routine.
What never became routine was the spiritual starvation—the absence of God’s Word.
“It was so tough in prison. Sometimes the roof leaked. The floor was muddy, and we slept there. There was no food. But you learn not to complain. In time, it all becomes normal.
What never becomes normal is being denied the Word of God.”
Over 1,000 Audio Bibles – and Counting!
Thanks to the prayers and support of people like you, our DOHI team has distributed over 1,100 solar-powered audio Bibles to persecuted Christians like Pastor Yohan. These precious tools are often the only source of Scripture available in prisons and remote house churches across Eritrea.
Right now, an estimated 3,000 believers are imprisoned in Eritrea—enduring endless suffering without access to a Bible. Thousands more are living in hiding or as refugees in neighboring Ethiopia.
In addition, countless others are secretly gathering in underground churches, desperate for God’s Word.
Each year, we equip frontline pastors like Yohan with audio Bibles to distribute among persecuted Christians and hidden house churches. We also provide food, clothing, and emergency aid to families suffering for their faith.
